Addition to the Heritage Trail

27th April 2025

A new heritage trail panel has recently been erected in St Mungo’s Churchyard . This is to provide a brief history about St Kentigern’s Church Tower .The panel is located next to the tower which is currently under going repair and restoration work . The tower has been a Penicuik landmark for almost 300 years . The recent repair work has revealed the stone vaulted chamber at ground floor level which was used at one time as an overnight prison or “lockup”.The original bell in the upper part of the tower is still there in very good condition with the date of 1680 inscribed as part of an decorative feature around the top of the bell casting. The belfry bell was a gift from Sir John Clerk’s grand uncle , John Anderson, a merchant of Edinburgh .
