First two building grants schemes approved

23rd January 2020

Two building grant applications have recently been approved as part of the Penicuik Heritage Regeneration Project.

  • No 10 The Square is a traditional stone cottage fronting onto The Square and dates from the mid-19th century.  The approved grant work will involve reslating the roof in natural slate to match the original, repairs and repointing the stonework and rebuilding a boundary wall and railings attached to the front of the building which is currently in very poor condition.
  • Nos 4-6 Bridge Street is a two storey traditional building dating from the late 19th century. The approved grant work involves replacing all the timber windows on the front elevation which are in poor condition with new timber sash and case windows to match and a new more traditional front door.

Midlothian Councillor Debbi McCall , Chair of the Penicuik Heritage Regeneration Project Team says:

“ I am delighted that we have now approved two building grant applications as part of the project .Both these schemes will not only improve the appearance and condition of the buildings they will also enhance the street view and the character of the town centre conservation area. The rebuilding of the stone boundary wall is particularly important as it is looking quite unstable now next to the pubic footpath at the top of Bridge Street.”  It is anticipated that work will commence in the next few weeks.
