Pen-y-Coe Press Building awarded grant

1-7 Bridge Street has been awarded a grant of £193,787.00 towards the cost of it’s repair and restoration .

This historic building know as the Pen-y-Coe Press includes a printing works and community stationary shop on the ground floor , run by the Penicuik Community Development Trust , together with a small heritage centre with an exhibition and artefacts explaining the history of paper making in the town. The upper floor houses four separate flats.

The total cost of the scheme is £234,252.00. The repair and restoration work will include roof , chimney and rainwater goods repair , taking off the cement render on the front to expose the natural stone beneath and then repairing and repointing the stonework.New traditional timber sash and case windows will replace the existing plastic ones and improvements will be carried out to the shopfront at ground floor level.

This is a high priority project in the scheme and the work will secure the future of the building and enhance this part of the town centre , complimenting the restoration of the Pilkington buildings opposite .
