Tradtional Construction Skills Training Plan Courses and Workshops Postponed

30th August 2020

The Traditional Construction Skills Training Plan that was published earlier in the year is now on hold due to Covid-19.

The first phase of the plan, demonstrations of stone and roof repairs and sign writing and marbling were delivered at Beeslack and Penicuik High School on the 11th and 12th March . 95 pupils attended over the two days. The next phase , workshop sessions at Edinburgh College’s Granton Campus were due to take place over 5 days in May . The idea being that pupils who attended the demonstrations in March and who expressed an interest for further information and knowledge about roof and stone repair and restoration would attend the workshops at Granton. Unfortunately this together with the proposed on site training at St Mungo’s churchyard in Penicuik were postponed due to the lock down.

A series of seminars and workshops for contractors , apprentices , home owners , building professionals and others planned over the summer and autumn months is also now being postponed. The Project will now work with the appointed training providers , Crew Frew Conservation Ltd and Edinburgh College to discuss and review the programme. This could also include the opportunity to tie in with Midlothian Council’s recently approved L4/5 Foundation Courses for apprentices in construction. The Council is also keen to appoint 2 apprentice stone masons to assist with stone repairs and restoration to church boundary walls across Midlothian. Once the revised programme is agreed with the partners it will be widely advertised during the autumn.
