Work starting this week on Penicuik Town Hall Restoration

26th November 2020

Improvement work will start on Penicuik Town Hall on the 23rd November 2020 and will complete at the end of June 2021.

The Penicuik Heritage Regeneration Project (PHRP) has grant aided enhancement and restoration work to the roof and external stonework of the building.

The renewable energy work to provide a new combined heat and power plant, photovoltaic panels on the rear roofs and WIFI throughout the building is being grant aided through the Government’s town Centre Fund.

The roof and stonework will be started first and the renewable energy work will begin after Christmas in the New Year.

The Town Hall is a distinctive historic building in the centre of Penicuik and is a high priority project for improvement under the PHRP.

The work will secure the external fabric of the building and will provide a more sustainable heating system enabling the local community to continue to use the building for training, education and events.

The Town Hall was originally built for the local people of Penicuik by Alexander Cowan one of  the founders of Alexander Cowan & Son papermakers of Penicuik in 1893. It has undergone some internal alterations over the years but the external appearance of the building has remained unchanged. The roof and stone restoration work will be carefully carried out using matching roofing slate and stonework, using traditional materials and techniques to enhance the historic character of the building.
