Penicuik’s artist in residence working in the Pen-y-Coe Press.

21st April 2022

Fiona Maher the PHRP’s artist in residence has been working in the Pen-y-Coe Press.

During the micro residency at Pen-y- Coe press people were invited to assist in recreating the River North Esk , based on an 1866 map which also featured the paper mills of the time.

In the latter part of the papermaking industry in Penicuik- the river would often flow in different colours , depending on the paper being made . To reflect this – this recreation of the river is being made in coloured paper pulp , in small sections . Participants made a small sheet of paper then overlayed it with coloured pulp using a small mesh screen and Bastet to draw the river with.  This is still a work in progress . The finished paper image will be screen printed over with a hand drawn version of the 1866 map
